Create Your Company Online: Screw Paperwork, Go Digital or Go Home

Stanford researchers surveyed more than 16,000 university-educated workers across 40 countries and found that working from home stabilised after the post-pandemic decline. In Europe, employees typically work remotely around one to one-and-a-half days per week, while English-speaking countries average even more.

At the same time, entrepreneurship in Europe keeps growing. The EU had around 34 million SMEs in 2025, with the number of businesses increasing by 1.8% in a single year.

The entrepreneur starting one of those businesses might sell consulting to Germany, manage advertising campaigns for a company in France, develop software for an American startup and hire a designer in Portugal. Their business does not begin and end at the door of an office, so why should their company?

The benefit when you create a company online is bigger than avoiding a trip to an office: you start designing the company around digital processes from day one, including documentation, banking, invoicing, accounting, team management and compliance.

That means less time transporting information between people and more time actually using it.

When people search for how to open an online business, they often jump straight to ecommerce, dropshipping or the latest internet side hustle.

That is far too limiting.

The best business to open online might simply be the business you already know how to build, without the physical infrastructure people once assumed it needed.

A marketing professional does not necessarily need an agency office: they need expertise, clients, software and collaborators. An IT consultant does not need to be sitting next to the client’s server. Europe still has plenty of bureaucracy, but some countries clearly got the memo before others.

Estonia treated administration like a technology problem. Its e-Business Register allows private limited companies to be established through its digital system, including standardised articles of association, while much of the company’s ongoing relationship with public administration also happens electronically.

The philosophy is simple: bureaucracy is a workflow, and workflows can be digitised.

Ireland offers a different model. It combines an established English-speaking business environment with online incorporation through the Companies Registration Office, and entrepreneurs are taking advantage of it. Ireland registered a record 7,483 new companies in Q1 2026, 15% more than in the same quarter of 2025.

Then there is Bulgaria, where company-registration applications can be filed entirely electronically using a qualified electronic signature, with lower state fees for electronic applications than physical ones. Bulgaria also adopted the euro on January 1, 2026, becoming the 21st member of the euro area.

Different countries, different systems, same direction: screw unnecessary paperwork.

And Europe as a whole seems to be reaching the same conclusion.

In March 2026, the European Commission proposed EU Inc., a new EU-wide corporate framework whose objectives include fully digital company creation within 48 hours, incorporation for less than €100 and company information being submitted only once. The proposal still needs to go through the EU legislative process, but the message behind it is difficult to miss.

Even existing EU company law is moving toward a “once-only” principle, meaning businesses should not repeatedly provide public authorities with information that another official register already holds.

Apparently, paperwork is finally becoming unpopular in Brussels too.

Online company formation should not mean that governments move 14 paper forms into a portal and leave the entrepreneur to figure everything out. Going digital should remove complexity from the founder’s experience, not simply change where the complexity lives.
