As you know, one of the most important requirements to correctly carry out your accounting is to have access to the bank statements of all the company’s accounts for bank reconciliation. This includes payment gateways like Stripe.

This statement must contain all the movements, not only the payments received but the withdrawal of funds after your bank account, possible refunds, etc.

In this article, we explain how to download the correct Stripe bank statements and submit them to Companio.

How to get the bank statements of Stripe for your monthly accounting, step by step

First, log into your Stripe account. In the menu on the left, choose “Payments” and then “All Payments”.

Now click on the “Export” button on the top right.

In the dialog that appears, choose “UTC” for the time zone, “Previous month” for the data range, and “All columns” for the columns to include. Click on the “Export” button. A CSV file will download.

Now go to the left menu, to “Reports” and then to “Financial Reports”.

Choose “Last month” in the date field. The date will change to the first and last date of the previous month. In the button at the right, with the clock icon, choose “UTC” (time zone). Then in the “Balance summary” section, you’ll see a “Download” button. Click on it.

Don’t touch any parameter (“All columns” should be selected) and click on “Download”. It will take some time, but finally the CSV balance report will be downloaded.

You need to upload that file, alongside the previous CSV file you got from the “All transactions” section to Companio. When uploading this last balance, Companio will probably indicate that there were no transactions in the file. That’s normal, it is a balance, so it does not contain any transactions. The transactions are in the first file downloaded from the “All transactions” section, so you can safely ignore this message.

How to get the bank statements of Stripe for your annual report, step by step

The process is very similar to the one we explained above to get the statements and balances for the monthly accounting. We simply need to change the dates to get the movements and balances of the whole year of the annual report.

First, access Stripe. In the menu at the left, choose “Payments” and then “All transactions”.

Now we need to click again on the “Export” button. This time, however, we will choose the whole year instead of the previous month.

You should choose “UTC” for the time zone field and “All” for the columns field as in the case of the monthly accounting reports. However, for the annual report, in the “date range” field, choose Custom. Then navigate to the 1st of January of the financial year of the report, and choose it as starting date, then choose the 31st of December of the same year as the end date.

For example, during 2021 we will perform your 2020 annual report. In that case, choose “Custom” in “date range” and choose from Jan 1, 2020, to Dec 31, 2020.

Finally, we will get the balance for the whole year. As in the case of the monthly accounting, you need to go to “Balances” and then to “Financial reports”.

Choose “Last year” in the date field. The dates will change to the 1st of January to the 31st of December. Choose “UTC” in the button at the right (the one with the clock icon) and then in the “Balance summary” section, choose “Download”. As with the monthly accounting reports, a new dialog will appear where you simply need to click on the “Download” button.

That will download the balance CSV file. That file, alongside the previously downloaded CSV file with all the transactions, must be uploaded to Companio.

Uploading the bank statement to Companio

This CSV file is the one you must upload to Companio. Just click on the “Bank statements” option on the left menu. Then use the “Upload” blue bottom at the top right.

Then choose “STRIPE” in the Choose Bank dropdown. You should have linked your Stripe account previously.

Now you should click on “CSV / Excel Upload” and choose the first CSV file you downloaded, the one including all the transactions. You don’t need to upload an extra PDF file. Just click on “Upload”. If the file is correct and contains valid transactions, they should be added now to the list of bank movements. Otherwise, please check the instructions again, the file should contain a series of transactions with an identifier that starts with txn_.

Repeat this operation with the balances file, the one you downloaded last.

Remember that the balances file (the one you downloaded from the “Financial Reports” section) does not contain transactions. So if Companio complains affirming that there are no transactions in that file, that’s normal, please ignore this message.

Conclusion

In this article, we show how in a few simple steps, and in less than a minute, you can download the Stripe bank statement for bank reconciliation as part of your company’s accounting.
